S. CARTRIDGE CO. (USCC), PETERS CARTRIDGE COMPANY (PC CO) and WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. (WRA) labels.Model 1911 ball rounds were first manufactured at Frankford Arsenal starting in August 1911 to support the newly adopted M1911 Colt Automatic Pistol by the U.S. Armed Forces. When the U.S. entered WWI, it was discovered that the supply of M1911 automatic pistols was insufficient to meet demand, so a substitute standard .45 caliber revolver was also procured. The M1917 revolver, manufactured by both Colt and Smith & Wesson, had been developed to use the standard .45 ACP cartridge that was held in a "half-moon clip" to aid in rapid ejecting of spent cartridges. The "half-moon clip", invented by S&W and produced in large quantities by various manufacturers during WWI, were supplied to small arms ammunition makers that were producing .45 ACP rounds. This allowed the packaging of the .45 caliber rounds already in clips, ready for immediate use in the revolvers, and were so marked on the cartons. The four known manufacturers of boxed clipped rounds include Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Peters Cartridge Co., and The United States Cartridge Co. In the 1920s, Frankford Arsenal packed 20 round cartons of M1911 with 7 clips placed loose in the carton, for use with the M1917 revolvers. Those cartons were marked on the top "This Package Contains 7 Revolver Clips", and was the last time half-moon clips were packed with cartridges.Each "Buy It Now" single purchase is for 4 unassembled cartons with dividers and 1 of each label.
