Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: William Henry Jackson's Colorado by Jones w dust jacket 1975 Regular Ed William Henry Jacksons Colorado by Jones w dust jacket 1975 regular edition 172 pages EX-Library Book The spirit of adventure and the fascination of photography touched William Henry Jackson early in life and remained an integral part of his character until the day of his death at age 99. Jackson may not have been the first to photograph the American West, but no one in his era, and few since, have surpassed him in expressing the flavor and rugged beauty of that region, photographically. During his lifetime, Jackson took thousands of photographs, not only in the west, but in Mexico, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia, including the Siberian wilderness. But it was in the American West and Colorado in particular, that he began his career as a photographer and where he produced some of his most memorable work. Jackson developed an especial fondness for Colorado, due in large part to his participation in the United States Geological and Topographical Surveys of the 1870's, conducted by Ferdinand V. Hayden. Those surveys produced the earliest known photos of the Cliff Dwellings in what is now Mesa Verde National Park and probably Jackson's most celebrated shot, that of the Mount of the Holy Cross. Jackson did not limit himself to the grand spectacles of nature, but captured on film the entire panorama of his era. From mountain majesty to clamorous steam trains and bone-jostling stage coaches. From Colorado's first citizens to miners and boom towns, Jackson recorded the splendor and history of nineteenth century Colorado. Here then, is William Henry Jackson's COLORADO: a superb collection of 200 historic photographs, carefully selected from the archives of the State Historical Society of Colorado, the Denver Public Library and United States Geological Survey. Most of these selections have never before been published in book form, thus bringing together an outstanding collection of historic Colorado photographs by a master frontier cameraman. Here is a living memorial of one man's efforts to preserve a vanished era for posterity. All pictures are of the actual item.
