Description: One of the nicest works by Eugene Califano I've come across. The beautiful oil on board is a scene of mountains and desert, possibly in the Palm Springs area. (The taller mountain may Mount San Jacinto, Mount Baldy or Mount San Gorgonio.) It has several nice areas of impasto. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Both the painting and the gilt frame are in excellent condition -- I can find no issues. The piece measures 18 x 22.5 inches overall; the painting itself is 15.5 x 20 inches. Please see photos and thanks for looking. Here is a brief bio of Califano: Painter, etcher, teacher. Born in NYC on Oct. 31, 1893, the son of artist John Califano. As a child Eugene learned to paint in his father's studio and by 15 was an accomplished painter. He returned to Italy in 1910 and further studied with Califano studied with Capuano, Celentano, Borgoni, and Giardiello. He was badly gassed while in the Army in France during WWI. After the war, he lived in Chicago until 1924 and for health reasons, then settled in Los Angeles. He died in Phoenix, AZ in May 1974.
