Description: Please read: I believe this may be a very early ( original) charcoal sketch by the renowned Japanese artist Taro Okamoto from 1936. It is possible the date says 1930 instead of 1936. He was born in 1911 and he was certainly experimenting with various kinds of art in his early years. Although it does not match his later signature, all of his known work was destroyed by allied bombing in World War II, but it is possible this item survived. In the 1920s, Russian ballerinas were introduced into Japanese culture and in this picture, we see Japanese women dressed up in ballerina costumes with a woman off to the side in a traditional kimono. I found this in a secondhand Japanese store in Northern Thailand that sells thrift items shipped from Japan to Thailand. I noticed the signature and when I took it out of its frame, it had some interesting things in the backing. Someone in the 1970s framed it (perhaps in a new frame) and stuffed a copy of a Japanese newspaper from the 1970s in the back, as well as, a calendar page and a vintage piece of paper from a theater/stage in Japan. I have taken a picture of everything that I found inside the frame. The frame was cracked and broken, and the glass was fractured, I rescued the peace from the frame and will ship both the picture and all the other items in the photographs to you for you to do your research, should you desire. If this is a very early Taro Okamoto, it is worth thousands. Given that I am unsure, I am offering it at a much lower price in the hope that someone else can do the needed research. I probably did it tomorrow. Do it there I think.
