Ambler's second spy novel and his first published in the U.S. An intrigue and mystery novel that was considered "The pioneer of the sophisticated espionage novel and widely regarded as the inventor of the modern political thriller" [Gilbert; Ian Fleming The Bibliography, p.634]. The plot portrays Kenton as a relatively apolitical British journalist depended on his ease with languages, his knowledge of European politics, and his quick judgment which sometimes failed him in his personal life. When he finds himself on a train bound for Austria with insufficient funds, he jumps at the chance to earn a fee to help a refugee smuggle securities across the border. He finds himself pitted against a conspiracy of fascist agents and big business. The Soviet spies Andreas and Tamara Zaleshoff, who figure in the 1939 "Cause for Alarm", made their original appearance here. He soon discovers that the documents he holds have more than a monetary value. Served as the basis for the 1943 Warner Brothers' production, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring George Raft, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Turhan Bey from a script by W. R. Burnett. Difficult title especially with dust jacket.
