Here we are offering DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH ZIMBABWE, an iconic original 1970 Cuban poster, designed to salute the war-torn, minority-ruled southern African nation (then known as Rhodesia), 10 years before it gained its independence from Great Britain. This famed Cuban poster was printed in 1970 by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which was founded in 1966 to demonstrate solidarity among socialist countries and promote various independence movements and other causes, including civil rights. This poster commemorates a worldwide "day of solidarity" (March 17, 1970) with the people of Zimbabwe (then known as Rhodesia). On that day, according to the New York Times, the United States cast a veto for the first time in the Security Council, joining Britain in rejecting an African‐Asian resolution that would have condemned Britain for not using force to overthrow the white‐minority government of Rhodesia. OSPAAAL closed its doors in June 2019 after a long run as a publisher of imaginative Cuban poster art. OSPAAAL posters can be found in museum and gallery collections worldwide. As an example, the 1970 DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH ZIMBABWE poster can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., as well as in numerous books about Cuban graphic art. This imaginative, five decades old poster, which depicts a tribal spear piercing a pith helmet (long associated in Africa with colonial rule), was designed by Faustino Pérez, one of OSPAAAL's most prominent designers in the 1960s and 1970s. As was the custom with many OSPAAAL posters, the title of this 1970 graphic was printed in four languages: English, Spanish, French and Arabic. This poster measures approximately 21 by 13 inches (54 x 33 cm). Please note that reproductions have been made of this and other OSPAAAL posters in Cuba and the United States. The poster we are offering in this listing is 100 percent genuine -- and original. Overall condition of this poster is good. Small imperfections can be expected on this and most OSPAAAL posters. But the poster in this listing is in really good shape!
