Description: THE LOCKHEED F-104 STARFIGHTER ITS CONCEPT AND ITS SYSTEMS By K. F. PITTMAN F-104 Engineering Division Lockheed Aircraft Corporation Burbank, California A very rare, and most likely unique original document produced by Lockheed Aircraft Corp. This file contains Lockheeds inaugural, and first ever technical presentation to the Royal Aeronautical Society, on the F-104 Starfighter aircraft. The presentation entitled,The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, It’s Concept and it’s Systems, was produced by K.F. Pittman, and presented to the Royal Aeronautical Society Australian Division, initially in Sydney on the 30th of September 1959, and again in Melbourne on the 15th of October 1959. This fascinating document includes 45 black-and-white photographs, including many detailed aspects of the Starfighter’s build, and design features, plus 13 preliminary / prototype drawn design plan views, of aircraft that were considered during the preliminary design evaluation stage, and unit the presentation had never before been shown outside of Lockheed's Preliminary Design Room. I’ve included a transcript of the first page of the presentation, which will give you some insight into its contents, what was covered, and is included in the presentation file documents.“I understand that from your Chairman that this will be Lockheed's first presentation to the Royal Aeronautical Society. You may be interested to know that this will be the first technical presentation of this type on the F-104 airplane which has been given anywhere in the world. There is a popular misconception about this airplane that a group of engineers turned out the design in a matter of weeks. This is not true. Actually It took longer to arrive at the basic airplane concept than it took to design, build and fly the first airplane. Tonight's presentation will be in two parts. First, I will try to show how the basic F-104 was conceived. I will show drawings of various types of airplanes which were considered during the Preliminary Design evaluation. These drawings have never before been shown outside of Lockheed's Preliminary Design Room. The second part of the presentation will be a brief review of the airplane's performance and airplane systems. Following the presentation your questions will be welcome. To properly set the stage for the F-104's background it is necessary to turn the clock back about 10 years to the 1949-1950 period. LAC had been awarded a contract together with Convair Weapon System MX 1179. It was to be the ultimate 1954 interceptor which finally emerged as the F-102. About the time we were rolling, an incident known as "Korea" took place. This prompted the Air Force to switch Lockheed to a Day Superiority Fighter, designed especially for Korean War type operation. We inmediately started design evaluation for a day fighter which was to have superior performance. Existing Specifications and airplane requirements were to be disregarded if they penalised performance.” This is a rare manufacturer’s document from the 1950’s, produced by Lockheed, it is an important and interesting aviation related item, a historical milestone in this aircrafts development, and a rare surviving piece, these original publications are now very scarce, and it would be a wonderful addition to any vintage aircraft enthusiasts collection.Featuring written information, numerous black-and-white photographs, and drawn diagrams, including plan views etc. Divided up into multiple sections covering numerous the aspects of the aircrafts design, build, capabilities, engines and performance, dimensions and payloads etc, please see pictures for details. This original document is in good condition for its years, with some signs of age and related wear only, the plastic spiral binding is a little broken places, but this could be replaced very easily, I have left as found as it is original to the item, please see pictures for details.A genuine period original, and not a copy, reprint or digital facsimile. Please see pictures for details.
