U.S. Solicitor General and Ambassador to the U.K. NEWSPAPER PORTRAIT TAKEN WHEN BRITISH AMBASSADOR SIR RONALD LINDSAY WAS WELCOMED TO THE UNITED STATES AT A DINNER GIVEN BY THE PILGRIMS OF THE UNITED STATES. Signed by Lindsay and by the three other guests pictured: Frank B. Kellogg, winner of the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize; William T. Manning, Episcopal bishop of New York; and John W. Davis, American Ambassador to the U.K. May 1930. A sepia-toned, 3-1/8 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide group portrait has been clipped from a newspaper and mounted on a piece of cream-colored paper, 5-3/8 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide, and then on a somewhat larger green card. Signed by all 4 members of the group: "R. C. Lindsay / May 10/1920", "Frank A. Kellogg", William T. Manning / May 17th, 1930" and "John W. Davis / May 12, 1930". There are some tiny stains to the edges of the cream paper. There are 2 chips to the edges of the green card with pieces out of its top left corner & top edge. Good. The four men pictured are standing in a row wearing evening dress. The Pilgrims of America, which has reciprocal membership with the Pilgrims of Great Britain, was founded at the Waldorf Astoria in 1903. By tradition the Pilgrims join together in a single toast to the British monarch and the President of the United States. The first speech on American soil by a new British Ambassador and the first speech on British soil by a new American Ambassador are addressed to the country's Pilgrims. Frank B. Kellogg [1856-1937] was an American lawyer, politician and statesman who served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Secretary of State. He co-authored the Kellogg-Briand Pact, for which he was awarded the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay [1877-1945] was a British civil servant and diplomat who was Ambassador to the United States from 1930 to 1939. William T. Manning [1866-1949] was an Episcopal bishop of New York. John W. Davis [1873-1955] served as Solicitor General of the United States and U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. under Woodrow Wilson.
