Description: Panama Canal Zone to USA Envelope 3 cent cancelled 1937 Balboa Heights to Sheaffer Pen Co., Ft. Madison, Iowa I am going through some of my late grandfather's possessions, and he has some interesting postage stamps and envelopes. Grandpa lived in Ft. Madison, Iowa, where Sheaffer Pen Company was and still is headquartered. At the time, fine pens like theirs were often sold in jewelry stores, so Grandpa has envelopes from lots of jewelers, bookstores and stationers around the world that must have once held payments or orders. This posted envelope was slit at the top and right edge with a letter opener to remove contents. Envelope is from Balboa Heights, Panama Canal Zone to W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa. The "Offical Business" line has been struck out and there is a hand-addressed return address on the reverse. This is a simple envelope, but the postmark, which appears twice, is nice. It is clearer in the lower cancelation that does not go over the stamp. 3 cent stamp with image of George Washington Goethals is clear and in nice condition. Normal handling wear. Postmarked 12 May 1937, Balboa Heights, Canal Zone. Postmark has a map for the canal showing its route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the words, "The Panama Canal Shortens Sea Routes." At the time of sending, the Panama Canal had been open for only 23 years, after the French had abandoned their effort to create the passage. I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
