Description: Noritake Condiment Set Salt Pepper Jam Caddy Hand Painted Art Deco 1918-31 Japan NORITAKE Exquisite Decorative CONDIMENT SET w/SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS, JAM JAR in CADDY, Hand Painted ART DECO SUNFLOWERS Pattern w/GOLD & Rusty Orange Trim, Noritake Company in Noritake, Japan, circa 1918-1931 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted set consists of a caddy containing salt & pepper shakers and jam jar w/lid. These were produced in the art deco sunflower pattern. The color palette is simple: orange, brown, yellow, black on cream w/gold. The design looks so classically art deco. The shaker tops are painted in a solid gold as are the caddy handle and the finial of the jam jar. The corks are still in the bottom. CONDITION: While this decorative set is classified as used, the condition is superb. One shaker has small, old nick on bottom of flange. This does not show unless it is turned upside down. (See photo #11.) There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks or wear on the gold. The holes appear to be perfect. DIMENSIONS: The shakers are 2 3/4" in height with a diameter of 1 3/4". The condiment well has a diameter of 1 3/4" with a depth of 1 1/4". The triangular caddy is 5 1/8" by 5 9/16". The height with the salt and pepper shakers in the caddy is 3 1/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The shakers are marked on the bottom with the single word "Japan". Most shakers are not marked. The caddy is marked with the red M-in-Wreath Japan mark which is cited in David Spain's Art Deco Noritake & More red mark #27.1 used 1918-1931. It also has the old paper label for Ivey’s price sticker on bottom of caddy—but the price has worn off! Ivey's was based in Charlotte, North Carolina and was founded in 1900 by Joseph Benjamin Ivey. The Ivey family interest was sold in 1980. Ivey's typically offered more upscale merchandise than another Charlotte-based chain, Belk, which was a competitor to Ivey's in many Southern cities and is still in business today. Noritake was formed by Morimura Bros. trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing porcelain china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan with its huge kaolin clay sources. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. Most of these items were painted in the 1918-1931 time period.
