Description: This is the December 12, 1912, issue of Life. The issue has a painted cover by C. Claude Squires of a saddled horse standing in snow and tied to a fence. The caption is “They Also Serve Who Only Stand and Wait.” This issue has verse, opinions, humor and great black & white illustrations. It also contains numerous great color and black & white advertisements (including at least a couple for electric cars, which were big in the early 1900s…) The magazine contains 52 pages and measures approximately 9 x 11 inches. C. Claude Squires (1883-1970) was a noted magazine cover artist, illustrator and painter whose works have been bought for decades. NOTE: This is a different “Life” than the iconic magazine most people are aware of… The “first” Life was published from 1883 to 1936 as a general-interest and humor publication. It featured contributions from many important writers, illustrators and cartoonists of its time including Charles Dana Gibson and Norman Rockwell. When Time, Inc. sought a name for its new photo magazine it bought the first version of “Life,” terminated it and then relaunched it as the magazine most of us now know.
