This is a Vintage ”Last Word” machinist dial test indicator, Model 711-F, made by the Starrett Manufacturing Company of Athol, Mass. In my opinion, it is one the most popular machinist dial indicators of all time. Over the past forty years I have seen them at every company I have worked for. What I didn’t know is that Starrett did not invent it. They purchased the design from a gentleman named H.A. Lowe, based in Cleveland, Ohio around 1935. Lowe had several patents on the “Last Word” design between 1915 and 1926. Note: A detailed history of Starrett is available in Ken Cope’s book, “Makers of American Machinist’s Tools”. Starrett purchased many tool designs over the years, and also created many designs of their own. Still in business today, Starrett continues to make some of the finest measurement tools available. Based on the appearance of the case and the text embossing on the top (see photos), I believe this example dates to before 1950, maybe before 1940. What I can say for sure is that this tool looks like it was never used. The cardboard protective tube, the absence of any wear on the tip, mounting bar and case tells me it was never used and was stored properly. I’m also including a tiny Starrett screwdriver. It isn’t original to the indicator, but it’s very high quality and pretty cool! The indicator works well and comes with everything you see. The pointer moves freely without any binding. The case measures about 4” by 2” by 1”. It’s an American workhorse indicator in new condition, and a great addition to any antique tool collection. *** TERMS and CONDITIONS.
