Description: A large original British Naval Chart covering a vital stretch of water which would prove pivotal to the defeat of Germany in WW2. Following the Normandy landings and the Allies' push East across France, securing the Belgian deep water port of Antwerp was key to speeding up frontline support and conserving vital fuel stocks. Access to the port was via the Scheldt (Schelde) Estuary, and its banks were so heavily defended that the Battle of the Scheldt raged for over five weeks before the Allies finally gained control of the shipping routes. Whilst there is no printing date on the chart, the last official "Small Corrections" were undertaken in 1925. Measures 145cm x 71cm. Will be shipped rolled in a stout cardboard tube. (At the time of listing, I have a similar British chart entitled "West Schelde - Flushing to Antwerp" separately listed.) From a large collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University - hence ink stamping to margin. (Following both World Wars, the government distributed excess stocks of Allied maps, along with captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc.) Please see my other WW1 - WW2 maps etc. Seller's Ref - 2U / 275
