Description: This counterstamped Spanish Empire Coin 6 Maravedi is a rare gem from the Pirate Era, with a unique counterstamp that adds to its historic value. 1636 is the year in which King Philip IV of Spain devalued copper coins and stamped the 6 Maravedis (stamping VI on existing lower face value Maravedis coins). After Philip IV took the throne, the loss of a substantial amount of wealth at sea (Treasure Fleet) in the late 1620s, along with the royal bankruptcy, and the Franco-Spanish War of 1635 would force the king to increasingly desperate measures to raise funds, levy and collect taxes and supply the military, although the disasters which would befall his son Charles II were far worse, culminating in the disastrous War of Spanish Succession with the loss of many territories and the fall of the Habsburg dynasty in Spain. The coin is heavily circulated but has survived the test of time, having been in existence for over 300 years. 2011
