Description: Name: Rhenocystis lapendulata (Cystoid) Age: Devonian Formation: Hunsruck Shale (Bundenbach) Location: Bundenbach, Germany Size: Cystoid is 1.4" long, plate is 6.5" wide!This is a very rare and unusual Devonian fossil. It is a primitive cystoid, Rhenocystis lapendulata, from the famous Bundenbach Slate of Germany. The quarry where this specimen was found used to mine roofing slate for decades, but is now shut down - the only way to obtain the unique fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This distinct cystoid has a long theca with good plate structure preserved. The extinct animal has both long arms intact, and a small stem is still attached to the body of the echinoderm. The striking fossil is replaced with iron pyrite, or ''fool's gold'', and is beautifully showcased and centered on the large, squared plate of roofing slate.
