Description: Antique WW2 US Army Military M1 Heavy Steel Helmet Shell Seam Swivel Bales Original (1943-1944). No liner.Measures: 11 1/8" L x 9 1/4" W x 7" H x 1/4" (shell thickness). Marking # 0183 and some initials are inside the helmet. The design of the bowl-like shell led to some novel use: when separated from the liner, the shell could be used as an entrenching tool, a hammer, washbasin, bucket, bowl, and as a seat. The shell edges were trimmed and has a crimped metal rim running around it, which provides a smooth edge. On the earliest shells the seam met at the front. This was moved to the back of the rim in 1944. The shells were then painted with flat olive drab paint shade 3chinstraps, replaced gradually throughout1943-44.Pls.
