Antique Revolutionary War Map, George Washington’s Army in VA, NC, SC & GA

Description: MAP 62"A Map of those parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia, which were the scenes of the most important Operations of the Southern Armies." 1806 This map is about the American Revolution, of course, not the US Civil War. A few years after George Washington’s death (in1799), Washington’s nephew, Bushrod Washington, asked John Marshall, who had served in the Culpeper Minute Men during the American Revolution, to write the Official Biography of Washington’s life. This he did. The book was subsequently published in both the US and in England. The geography is the same (of course) in both editions, but the map printing and engravings were done by different men. The British edition was published by Richard Phillips, in London 1806. The US edition was published by C.P. Wayne, Philadelphia in 1807. The same geography, and “important scenes” were revisited in 1834 in another map with this title. If you want the Biography, get John Marshall’s book. If you want to collect maps, you can collect all the various editions. If you just want the image: buy a reprint! Our map is the earliest version. Barry Lawrence Rudderman Antique Maps, Inc. has described this 1st edition of the map as:“Interesting example of this Revolutionary War battle map of the Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The map accompanied Marshall's Life of Washington. …… Normally, a $350.00 map.” Special Features:Life of Washington look backPaths his Revolutionary Army followed between the lower Chesapeake Bay and Savannah, Georgia. [1776-1783] Guest Editor: I, Harald Leuba, am listing this map on eBay with the permission of the eBay account holder, my wife of 56 years, Nancy Kingsbury, aka "Showjudge". She is worried about how to find homes for our "stuff" when I die -- > if I die before her. We have enjoyed living with this map in our collection, but as I age, (I am now 86), I feel that I ought to protect IT from becoming lost in some 2nd hand store and, more importantly, I need to protect Nancy from having to cope with how to harvest its reasonable value in a time of personal stress. [In other words: We are downsizing!]...... I bought this map from John Faupel, Antique Atlas, East Grinstead, UK some 30 years ago. It was his # 308 in catalog 85. I have misplaced John's catalog, but he titled the map:85/308PHILLIPSA Map of those parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia, which were the scenes of the most important Operations of the Southern Armies.1806There is an image of THIS map on the Library of Congress website, which anyone can download. There are also images of almost THIS map in theNew York City Public Library Digital CollectionSee their map in my photo #6 and note: (a) the “Plate VIII.” Outside the margin in the upper left, and (b) the “Published by C.P. Wayne, Philadelphia” Outside the margin on the lower right corner.University Of South Carolina Digital Collection also as the Philadelphia printing. And there is a later printing, 1832, with a type set cartouche.Photo #7 is a screen shot of this map in situ - i,e, FOLDED in the Biography of George Washington;…High Ridge Books $225 Uncolored map of the southeastern colonies, featuring most prominently North Carolina and South Carolina from the London edition of John Marshall’s Life of George Washington. Also good detail around the James River in Virginia. The geography and features on this London edition of this map are essentially the same as on the American edition of the same year, though the map has been entirely re-engraved. Does not show any troop locations. Very good condition, previously folded. My Comment: The edition and date or our map are ON the map, above and below the margins. This is the edition, date, and publication location BLR referred to. (above) "Normally, a $350.00 map.” Having verified the identity of the map we are seeking a home for, let us move on to Fair Market Value: Our map’s surface is lovely and bright and clean; no offsetting or darkening,Our map lies flat. Our map is not colored. Our map has full margins on three sides. We have cared for this map by holding it flat in an Archive Binder with Acid free Plastic sleeves. If you are interested enough in maps to be considering buying an Original, you know that the plates for antique maps were often reused/reprinted/recycled/revised and that there are many different (related) versions available today. You will also know that maps were not usually stand-alone images. They appeared in bibles, histories, and even in atlases! This map appeared in a “history”: “The Life of Washington”; published by Richard Phillips, New Bridge Street, London. But there are other “versions” of this map. …Last month, Barry Ruderman came to our house to look at our maps with a view to his acquiring the whole collection. He was warmly professional and lived up to his reputation for expertise. He said that our maps had been well cared for and were in unusually good condition. And, since he does not have this map in stock, and I cannot find any another “benchmark” copy on line, I am listing this map at 10% less than Barry’s most recent estimated value. You CAN get my original good condition copy now – Buy it Now or make an offer. .....Please help us find a new home for this treasure. Thank you for looking. Harald & Nancy P.S. Inflation? NO! When I bought my first map, there was silver in our US coinage. When I was in college, I could buy a gallon of gas for a silver quarter and mail a letter home for 4ç. I can STILL buy a gallon gas for the value of that silver quarter, but postage is now 60ç. Antique maps have doubled in price in the last ten years. Are they a store of value? I think so, but whether they are or not, they can be a permanent source of pleasure. P.P.S We are using the proceeds of this sale, not to add “dollars” to our bank account, but to support local charities (to help neighbors who have lost income due to Covid)!I hope you are pleased with your purchase and have warm feelings about helping others.
