Description: We are offering this vellum bound 1st edition of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" signed and numbered by Arthur Rackham published in 1908 by William Heineman (London) and Doubleday, Page and Co (New York). It is the Edition Deluxe which was limited to 1000 numbered and signed copies (our book is number 395). It is a large quarto (11 1/2" x 9 1/16") and has a total of 134 pages (with one blank page) and forty color plates on brown art paper with descriptive tissue guards and thirty black and white drawings throughout the text. It is bound in its original vellum over boards pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt. The top edges are gilt, and the others are untrimmed. The boards, spine and edges are clean and bright with a very slight yellow tone on left side of front cover. The picture guards have some light foxing and some foxing to page edges. Book has its original gold silk ties (one shortened by about 2"). The board corners square and the spine has no splits. The bookplate of Evelyn Violet Westinghouse is on front flyleaf. Evelyn Violet Westinghouse (1882-1943) was the daughter of English shipping magnate Thomas Brocklebank and the wife of George Westinghouse II. We bought the book many years ago from her daughter-in-law Mrs. George Thomas Westinghouse. This copy is in very good + condition.
