Description: Built by the Ohio Band Instrument Company of Cleveland, O. The Model 1201 Long Cornet in Bb/A (slides pull to A). The serial number dates to the 1940s. According to the company the Regent was “triple silver plated”, with “polished highlights”. Indeed, the silver plate is fully intact after all these years. The body of the horn has satin finish, with polished bell hallmark, polished slides and trim, and polish gold wash inside the bell. It’s a cool look. Rather compact, for a long model. Check out the loop at the bell tail, and the narrow wrap across the valve assembly. It definitely has a cornet shank receiver. The specs: 4 1/2” Diameter brass bell Medium bore at 0.445” Very cool diagonal rod-and-socket bracing* *When the 1201 was introduced in the 1930s it had a distinctive “X” shaped brace. The company adopted the diagonal single brace in the 1940s, but by the 50s a more cost effective diagonal brace from stamped rod stock was used. The bracing on this model is my favorite of the three. These were considered beginner instruments in the day. I know, you’ve probably seen these as lamps, or perhaps decorating the walls of national casual dining chain, but it’s a cool looking li’l horn and it plays okay. This is too good to make a lamp out of, but would look great in a shadow box or a hook on the wall of your home studio or man cave. Why not start or enhance your collection of American made vintage cornets? What about a special cornet for brass playing at Christmas time? There is evidence of past repairs: note the water key nipple and brace at the receiver. The first piston suffered some moderate damage at one time due to an object lodged inside the casing, but it moves freely and the horn is playable. The stop rod assembly is missing.
