1940 PRESIDENTIAL Election WILLKIE & McNARY Roosevelt 3RD TERM Political BUTTON

Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1940 PRESIDENTIAL Election WILLKIE & McNARY Roosevelt >3RD TERM Political BUTTON Description This is a “Willkie and McNary” pinback "Political Button" from the 1940 United States Presidential Election. The Republicans ran the Lawyer & Corporate Executive, Wendell Willkie of Indiana, and the Senate Minority Leader Charles McNary of Oregon against the two-time incumbent President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and his new Vice-Presidential candidate, Henry A. Wallace, who had been his Secretary of Agriculture.   Wendell Willkie had the poor luck to run at the beginning of World War II. France had fallen to the Germans in June and Britain fought on alone. Roosevelt had been elected President twice already, and didn't want to run again. He said that he could not deny a genuine draft from his party while he was drafting men into the armed forces. He was drafted. War was coming and the nation wanted to stay with a trusted, proven leader. Willkie lost.   Weight: 1.43 Grams, 23 Millimeters, Metal. "A Guide Book to United States Medals and Tokens" by Katherine Jaeger. (General Reference). Obverse: WILLKIE • and • Mc NARY   After running against him, Willkie became an unofficial personal representative of President Roosevelt and went to Great Britain to show bipartisan support. Sadly, Wendell Willkie died from a heart attack in 1944, before the war was over.   Reverse: GREENDUCK CO. CHICAGO • Union "bugs".   The button was made by the “Green Duck Company”, of Chicago. Founded in 1906, by George G. Greenburg and Harvey Ducgheisel. It became Chicago's go-to manufacturer for all things small metal. Their factory was on Clybourn Avenue, a stone's throw from Wrigley Field. Countless campaigns wore the Green Duck badge. Though their doors finally closed in 2004, the Green Duck's legacy survives in its many collectibles.   The Button: A pleasing fully original example of a historical button. It has passed through some hands and has some light defects. Willkie will probably remain the only man to ever lose to a third term President.
