Description: The Children of Dickens by Samuel McChord Crothers and illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith. Copyright 1925 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. Hardcover. Black 259-page book with paste-on on front and nicely decorated endpapers and tissue over frontispiece. The book shows some wear to binding with a couple of nicks, smudging of gold trim around color picture on front, etc., but overall is good. No dust jacket. Not ex-libris. Book measures 9.5” by 7” by 1.5”. 10 lovely full-page full-color plates In this charming, beautifully illustrated book -- out of print for more than sixty years -- Samuel McChord Crothers introduces children to the unique world of Dickens children and does it with warmth and interest: David Copperfield, the Micawber children, Joe the Fat Boy, Oliver Twist, the Jellyby family -- to name a few. In 13 self-contained chapters, in simple, straightforward prose, Mr Crothers introduces the necessary background, and then gives us the scene itself as Dickens wrote it. The book is illustrated with the work of Jessie Willcox Smith, famous for her romantic and touching paintings and drawings of children. The illustrations are really lovely. Good condition, some writing on inside cover and inscription on blank page at front. Considerable page staining (see photos) but a lovely book nonetheless.
