Fred Warde Lewellyn, 77, retired army officer who was a native of Hillsboro and graduate of Pacific University at Forest Grove, died August 22 of a heart ailment at Walter Reed army hospital in Washington, D. C. He was one of the founders of the American Legion. General Llewellyn formerly was adjutant general of the state of Washington, one of the youngest national guardsmen to serve in that post. During World War I he served with the 28th division in France. He was retired in 1942 while serving as the assistant judge advocate general of the army, but remained on active duty another 18 months. Later he practised law in Washington, D. C., until failing health forced his retirement in 1950. Service Medals Received His decorations included the distingushed service medal and the legion of merit. He was one of the 17 who attended the organization meeting of the American Legion in Paris at the end of World War I. He served as the first commander of Rainer post of the Legion at Seattle. He leaves the widow Mildred, in Bethesda, Md., and a son, James G. Llewellyn. A son, Fred W. Llewellyn Jr., was drowned in the Snake river in 1949.
