A Paris, Chez Francois Buisson, Libraire-Editeur, Rue Gilles-Coeur, No. 10. 1812.Description: Beautiful contemporary coloured border copper engraved Map Russia in Europe, showing Moscow Finland Estonia Crimea Poland, rich in meaning and with countless place (toponomastic…) name and geographical details that enrich even more its value, published in 1812 in Paris by Francois Buisson in 'Atlas Complet Du Precis De La Geographie Universelle De M. Malte-Brun Lapie. Origin: It is an authentic Antique map with original handcolor outlining as issued. It is from Malte-Brun's Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle de M. Malte Brun, published in Paris by Chez Buisson in 1812. It is blank on the reverse. It is being sold as a single sheet, not matted nor framed, as shown in the pic. It is often attributed to both Conrad Malte-Brun (1775–1826) and Pierre M. Lapie, who primarily wrote the text and oversaw the accuracy. It is a rare early Malte-Brun map that is not often found, especially desirable for its color and accurate detail for the time period, as well as the nice vignette (scene) in the title area. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age with very light overall tonal ageing, blank on reverse with handcolor outlining, basically as seen in the pics. It is very clean on a strong page that will frame up nicely, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map, although the actual maps generally look better. Conrad Malte-Brun (1755-1826), was a French geographer. His original name was Malte Conrad Bruun. While a student at Copenhagen he made himself famous partly by his verses, but more by the violence of his political pamphieteering; and at length, in 1800, the legal actions which the government authorities had from time to time instituted against him culminated in a sentence of banishment. The principles which he had advocated were those of the French Revolution, and after first seeking asylum in Sweden he found his way to Paris. There he looked forward to a political career; but, when Napoleons personal ambition began to unfold itself, MalteBrun was bold enough to protest, and to turn elsewhere for employment and advancement. He was associated with Edme Mentelle in the compilation of the Geographic mathmatique . . . de toutes les parties du monde (Paris, 1803-1807, 16 vols.), and he became recognized as one of the best geographers of France. He is remembered, not only as the author of six volumes of the learned Prcis de la geographie universelle (Paris, 1810-1829), continued by other hands after his death, but also as the originator of the Annales des voyages (1808), and one of the founders of the Geographical Society of Paris. His second son, VICTOR ADOLPHE MALTE-BRUN (1816-1889), followed his father’s career of geographer, and was a voluminous author. Pierre M. Lapie (1779-1850) was a French Cartographer and Engraver. He was the father of Cartographer Alexandre Emile Lapie. Lapie was a Colonel in the French Army, where he worked in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. Lapie worked closely with his son and published works together and individually. The work of Lapie and his son is was influential on German Commercial Map Makers in the 19th Century. Works by Lapie are held in the collection of the Library of Congress. Lapie did many works of Cartography, and above all he was a specialist in the creation of Atlases, Geographical Maps, both Modern and Ancient, and even of War.
