The paragraph below is found below the print: “And how felt he, the wretched man Reclining there — while memory ran O'er many a year of guilt and strife, Flew o'er the dark flood of his life.” Lalla Rookh Edward Corbould was a British artist predominantly known for his literary and historical illustrations in watercolor. He was trained by Henry Sass (1788-1844) and later studied at Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited widely throughout his career and in 1871 was appointed 'Instructor of Historical Painting' to the Royal Family, a position he held for more than twenty years. Many of his works were acquired by Queen Victoria and went into her collections at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, and Buckingham Palace, London. CONDITION: This book illustration/print is in good condition. However, the page where the illustration is engraved shows expected signs of age: yellowing, foxing, edge wear, some creasing, and darkening around the edges. It also has small tears on the top left corner of the page and on the left side of the page. There are a few thumb tack holes on the left side of the page. Still, the simplicity and elegance of this black and white book illustration/print makes it classic and timeless. It has clarity in black, white and the spectrum of greys in between.
