Description: 1771 Dated Inscribed Pencil and Ink Wash Drawing Kenilworth Castle Warwickshire 1771 Dated Inscribed Pencil and Ink Wash Drawing Kenilworth Castle Warwickshire, Warwick, United Kingdom, Signed, Dated and Inscribed on verso This is a lovely 18th century British pencil drawing and ink wash of a landscape in the area of Kenilworth Castle Warwickshire, Warwick. I believe that this may be a geographical Parliamentary or terrain survey drawing for the eventual mapping of the area. There are some very similar compositions in prints that were created for King James that were made around 1790, perhaps these (I have several from same period listed) are preparatory sketches for the later prints. On the back, it is inscribed in black(oxidized) ink and reads "Kenilworth Castle - once the seat for the Earl of Leicester / five miles from Warwick / A.W. 1771-7" (I suppose it was made in the month of July of 1771" The image depicts the Kenilworth castle ruins as they were in 1771 in pencil, and it is shaded in with ink wash . There are several other drawings and watercolors that are by the same hand that I have listed. Measurements:15 x 21 1/2 inches Condition: Condition is commensurate with age and use. Creases, some tears and curling on edges. Minor stains and scuffs throughout.
